Ghost dog one of my favorites. Movie combines jim jarmuschs funny ass deadpan humor with some nice samurai existential philosophy. Perfect combo of seriousness and levity. Like it doesn't make a joke of itself at the expense of the philosophy or the main character. The comedy seems to send it home, while acknowledging some of the absurdity of samurai code.

And make no mistake, a lot of the samurai code is retard fanaticism. Read the hagakure to find out. Here's one funny example off the top of my head.. a samurai part of some march gets the shits so he rushes to the first home he can to relieve himself. Well just so happens a married woman was alone in the house. When it's found out what happened, both executed, cause why not. No way to prove they didn't have sex or something.

Le samourai on the other hand takes itself way too seriously imo and the plot has too many holes and dumb things going on for how serious it tries to be. Great imagery though. Love the scenes of him chilling in the apartment smoking with the bird. maybe gotta rewatch it.

good lone wolf porn.. Here's a few more recommendations

The hunter 2011

lone wolf and cub series from the 70s (hilarious and deep)

yojimbo

limits of control 2008 (another kinda absurd jim jarmusch ronin type character following some obscure code)

harakiri 1962 (good critique on samurai code and hipocracy.. applicable to any bureaucracy really)

thief 1981

you were never really here 2017

Ha! I really liked this movie when it came out. I’m not a hip hop fan at all, but for some reason “From Then Til Now” has been on my regular playlist for 25 years.

1999 was a really great year for movies. So many great films came out that year. There was this vague apocalyptic dread in the air, and in retrospect it seems like maybe the movies of that year were one last cultural flowering before the descent began.

I'll echo Theon is shouting out your local library for physical media (DVDs, Blu-rays...). Last year I knocked out around 75 films from my Letterboxd list that were just never showing up in rotation on streaming.

Many libraries also have access to the free but usage metered specialty streamers Kanopy (many Criterion and foreign films) and Hoopla (wide variety of middle tier-films and a few classics). Depending on your state, you might be able to get a library card from a neighboring county and use their streaming services if your resident county doesn't have them. This is also a great way to stack your Libby borrowing abilities for e-books and audiobooks.
